The Book of Mulling
The Book of
Mulling is on display alongside the Book of Kells in the Colonnades
exhibition area in Trinity College, Dublin. The Book of Mulling is
one of a group of Irish 'pocket' Gospel books used by Irish missionary
monks travelling on the Continent. It dates from the second half
of the 8th century. The illumination consists of initials decorated with
spirals, interlace, animal heads, and other patterns. The colours used
include white, blue, green, yellow, ochre, browm, mauve, purple and
cherry red. Three of the Evangelist portraits survive: Matthew, Mark and
John.
St Moling (d.692x697) was the founder of the monastery of St Mullins
(Tech-Moling) in South County Carlow. The manuscript belonged in
the eighteenth century with its 'cumdach' (cover or shrine) to the
Kavanagh family at Borris Idrone, Co. Carlow.
